Welcome to the Sylvan Street Garden, a community garden project in East Nashville, Tennessee. We are located at the Kirkpatrick Center (Corner of 9th and Sylvan), close to James A. Cayce Homes and CWA Housing, right off Shelby Ave. The garden benefits not only the large refugee population of the housing development (many of whom maintain family plots), but also the Martha O'Bryan Center Food Bank, which helps the 1,500 families gain access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The garden is also available for use by nearby educational programs, such as the CWA-Cayce Learning Center.

“I have heard about the Sylvan Street Garden, and I understand that many of you who are working here are from East Africa and that you passed through Kenya, and I’m so glad to hear that you are working and touching the soil and growing crops and reconnecting with the land that I’m sure you all so love. And I just hope that the soil, the environment, the vegetables, and the food crops that you grow here will nourish not only your bodies, but that the experience will also nourish your souls.”

Dr. Wangari Maathai is the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless work planting trees and empowering women. For more info, visit The Green Belt Movement.
